PAA July Workshop (online)

Melanie North
Walk the Line: Gait workshop with PAA Member Melanie North

A 1.5-hour workshop focusing on the mechanics of gait and exploring movement from the foot upward through the kinetic chain. We'll analyse the components of efficient walking and consider how optimal foot function supports organised movement throughout the ankles, knees, hips and pelvis.

Using a range of apparatus and small props, we'll explore strategies to develop strength, mobility and proprioception in the toes, feet and lower limb, while integrating these elements into coordinated gait patterns.

The workshop will also consider the relationship between gait mechanics and postural alignment, supporting more efficient and functional movement in both practice and teaching.

Equipment and props:
Studio apparatus including Cadillac, Core Align, Reformer and Wunda Chair
Small props including hedgehogs & resistance band

About Melanie:
Melanie was introduced to Pilates in 2002, following the birth of her second child, by her sister, a Polestar Pilates instructor. With a background in dance and state-level athletics specialising in hurdling and sprinting, she developed a strong foundation in movement. Following a history of knee injuries, Pilates played a pivotal role in helping her restore balance, build strength, and improve functional movement patterns.

Melanie initially established her own personal training business before expanding her qualifications to include Barre, Mat and Reformer Pilates in 2012. After a personal development trip to New York, she completed her Diploma with Polestar Pilates, further deepening her clinical and movement-based approach. Since qualifying, Melanie has worked across Victoria, the Sunshine Coast, and now Darwin. She mentored for Polestar for a number of years and delivered education for Pilates Pro Academy in Darwin.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated closely with a range of allied health professionals, including physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors. Melanie currently works part-time as a studio instructor within an osteopathy clinic while studying physiotherapy full-time, continuing to integrate evidence-based practice with her passion for movement and rehabilitation.
